We examine the claims behind tartar control mouthwash: does it reduce buildup and whiten teeth? Here is the evidence from TOBS.
Quick answer
Yes, a tartar control mouthwash can help reduce new tartar buildup and maintain whiter teeth when used consistently, but it won't remove existing tartar.
What tartar control mouthwash can and cannot do
Tartar control mouthwashes contain ingredients that help prevent minerals in saliva from hardening into tartar (calculus) on your teeth. This means they can slow down new buildup, but they cannot dissolve tartar that has already formed. For existing tartar, a professional dental cleaning is required.
The whitening effect comes from reducing the stain-trapping layer of tartar, not from bleaching agents. So the mouthwash helps keep teeth naturally white by preventing the rough surface where stains accumulate.
Verdicts on tartar control mouthwash claims
- Claim: Prevents tartar buildup: True. The active ingredients in tartar control mouthwash can reduce the rate at which new tartar forms, especially in hard-to-reach areas. Use after brushing to maximize contact time, and do not rinse with water immediately afterward.
- Claim: Whitens teeth: Partially true. The mouthwash whitens by preventing tartar from forming, not by bleaching. Teeth appear brighter as the rough, stain-absorbing layer is minimized. For best whitening results, pair with regular brushing and professional cleanings.
- Claim: Removes existing tartar: False. No mouthwash can dissolve hard tartar deposits. A dental scaling is necessary to remove existing buildup. Do not skip dental visits expecting mouthwash to replace a cleaning.
